Avian Development Facility (ADF)The Avian Development Facility (ADF) is a middeck locker equivalent facility that contains two independent specimen centrifuges that can be operated to produce inertial accelerations equivalent to 0 to 5 G under feedback control. Each centrifuge has 18 sample containers currently designed to hold one Japanese-quail egg each for the study of development of returned fixed or live embryos. The sample holders are served by a chemical robot that injects solutions into the sample containers under triple-containment conditions. For additional details, visit the description ADF page. |
Animal Enclosure Module (AEM)The Animal Enclosure Module (AEM) is a self-contained rodent habitat that provides its occupants with living space, food, water, ventilation, and lighting. The AEM is space-proven hardware and have flown on 23 previous Space Shuttle mission, most recently on STS-118 in August 2007. For additional details, visit the description AEM page. |
Beetle KitThe Beetle Kit was adapted from an existing item of Russian research hardware by Ames Research Center. Each Beetle Kit Assembly houses 32 beetles. Within the assembly, each beetle is individually enclosed in a Beetle Activity Module, which provides facilities for life support and data recording. For additional details, visit the description Beetle Kit page. |
Biomass Production System (BPS)The Biomass Production System (BPS) is a plant growth system that operates in an EXPRESS rack on the ISS. It includes four independent growth chambers, a nutrient delivery system, a temperature/ humidity control system, airflow and atmospheric control systems, a video system and a data-processing system. For additional details, visit the description BPS page. |
Drosophila Containers and PlatformsThe Drosophila Containers and Platforms provide housing and food for fruit flies. The platform provides the capability to changout food and transfer old food trays with larvae to new clean food tray containers in support of multi-generational studies. For additional details, visit the description Fly Kits page. |
Microbial Cryogenic Canister AssembliesThe Microbial Cryogenic Canisters provide containment for microbial experiments. The canisters containing the Cryovials can be stored in temperature controlled environments during ascent, on-orbit, and descent. For additional details, visit the description Microbial Cryogenic Canister Assemblies page. |
Passive Dosimeter System (PDS)The Passive Dosimeter System (PDS) hardware consists of two kinds of radiation dosimeters and an electronic "reader." The “reader” and one of the dosimeters are currently on orbit and available for use. For additional details, visit the description PDS page. |
Single Loop Cell Culture (SLCC)The Single Loop Cell Culture (SLCC) is a facility that supports microbial and cell culture, exposing model organisms to space environment (radiation, microgravity, etc.). For additional details, visit the description SLCC page. |
Plant Growth Experiment Unique Containers (EC )for the European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS) The EMCS is an experiment facility for biological investigations under microgravity. It shall allow for cultivation, stimulation and crew assisted operation of biological experiments under well controlled conditions. Depending on the experiment specific hardware, it can be adapted to different applications e.g. to (larger) plants and invertebrates. For additional details, visit the description Plant Growth Experiment Unique Containers (EC ) page. |
